At the Moment of Burst Test, Why Does the Steel Shield Plate Fall Slowly? Uncovering the Hidden Feature of Shield Rubber Dam

1. Test Observation: Counterintuitive yet by Design

During the airbag burst test, the pressure inside the chamber drops instantly. Conventional wisdom would expect the steel shield plate to be violently blown away. However, test footage shows the plate descends gently and steadily.

This is not a structural failure. It is a combined effect of physical laws: the pressure difference lasts only a very short time, the steel shield plate has large inertia, and the damping structure absorbs impact energy. Together these factors restrain violent movement of the shield plate.

2. Shield Rubber Dam: A Hydraulic Structure Combining Rigidity and Flexibility

A Shield Rubber Dam consists mainly of steel shield plates, inflatable airbags and a control system. Inflating the airbags erects the dam for water retention; deflating the airbags causes the shield plates to collapse for flood discharge. Its key advantages are as follows:

  • • High flood safety: The dam can fully collapse onto the riverbed within around 20 minutes. No water level difference remains after collapse, and the discharge width is nearly equal to the river channel, delivering reliable performance under typhoon and heavy rain conditions.
  • • Eco-friendly: Compressed air serves as the driving medium instead of hydraulic oil, eliminating the risk of oil pollution to water bodies. Collapsed shield plates do not block migration routes for aquatic organisms, and overflow over the dam creates natural waterfall scenery.
  • • Robust structural performance: Adopting modular assembly design, the airbag has a theoretical service life of over 50 years. Flexible connections provide good seismic resistance and tolerance to uneven foundation settlement.
  • • Flexible operation and control: Supports automatic, on-site manual and remote control. Flood discharge can still be operated manually during power failure. Dam erection takes approximately 30–40 minutes, and dam lowering takes about 20 minutes.

3. Engineering Insight

The slow descent of the steel shield plate embodies the engineering principle of inertial buffering and damping energy dissipation. With the design philosophy of integrating rigidity and flexibility, the Shield Rubber Dam achieves an optimal balance among flood safety, aquatic ecological protection and operational efficiency.
