Rubber dam is a type of flexible low head water structure that uses high-strength synthetic fibers as the basic skeleton and applies rubber as a protective film on both the inside and outside. Anchors are usually set on riverbeds or reinforced concrete bottom plates of some buildings, and then the dam bag is filled with gas or water to expand and control the water level, replacing traditional dam gates for flood control, irrigation, and power generation. Since the mid-20th century, our country has been developing rubber dams, and now more than 20 provinces have applied this type of dam.
1. Advantages of rubber dam
1.1 Reduce the usage of building materials
After years of practice in rubber dam construction, the construction of rubber dams can save a large amount of building materials, especially cement, steel, and wood, by more than 50% compared to traditional dams. While ensuring project quality, it greatly reduces the investment of construction funds and creates higher economic benefits for the country and construction enterprises.
1.2 Flexible and easy to maintain
The water blocking effect of rubber dams is relatively small, with a large span, and the maximum span can reach 900 meters. While reducing the number of piers, it also increases the effective water crossing section. Moreover, rubber dams have the characteristic of flexible lodging. When floods come, placing the dam bags can prevent the water passage section of the riverbed from being affected. The operation is very flexible and the opening and closing are also very simple. It only requires the installation of an air compressor or water pump to adjust the height of the dam body, and there is no need to build a work bridge. The process of repairing it is also relatively simple. When the dry season comes, draining a part of the water inside it can achieve simple maintenance. Unlike traditional gate maintenance work, which requires the construction of maintenance gates, this also greatly saves project funds.
1.3 Simple production method
At present, the manufacturing of rubber dams has achieved a factory process, and many enterprises in our country can manufacture rubber dams without being affected by construction conditions and external environment factors. The installation is very simple, which greatly improves the construction efficiency of the dam body and saves a certain amount of action, thereby achieving the goal of saving funds. 1.4 Good seismic resistance due to the fact that the rubber dam body is a flexible thin shell structure, which is relatively light and has a certain degree of elasticity. Moreover, rubber dams do not have high working bridges and hoisting frames, which makes them very outstanding in terms of seismic performance.
